Minimizing Total Completion Time for Preemptive Scheduling with Release Dates and Deadline Constraints

چکیده
It is known that the single machine preemptive scheduling problem of minimizing total completion time with release date and deadline constraints is NPhard. Du and Leung solved some special cases by the generalized Baker’s algorithm and the generalized Smith’s algorithm in O(n) time. In this paper we give an O(n) algorithm for the special case where the processing times and deadlines are agreeable. Moreover, for the case where the processing times and deadlines are disagreeable, we present two properties which could enable us to reduce the range of the enumeration algorithm.

The preemptive resource-constrained project scheduling problem subject to due dates and preemption penalties: An integer programming approach
Extensive research has been devoted to resource constrained project scheduling problem. However, little attention has been paid to problems where a certain time penalty must be incurred if activity preemption is allowed. In this paper, we consider the project scheduling problem of minimizing the total cost subject to resource constraints, earliness-tardiness penalties and preemption penalties, ...
متن کاملA $(2 + \epsilon)$-approximation for precedence constrained single machine scheduling with release dates and total weighted completion time objective
We give a (2 + ǫ)-approximation algorithm for minimizing total weighted completion time on a single machine under release time and precedence constraints. This settles a recent conjecture made in [18]
متن کاملScheduling Unit-time Operation Jobs on Identical Parallel Machines and in a Flow Shop: Complexity and Correlation
This paper considers the complexity and the correlation of scheduling unit-time jobs on identical parallel machines and unit-time ow-shop scheduling under precedence constraints. It is shown that, in the case of chain-like precedence constraints, the nonpre-emptive parallel-machines problem and the ow-shop problem to minimize maximum or total completion time can be solved in polynomial time, an...
متن کاملMinimizing Total Completion Time Subject to Job Release Dates and Preemption Penalties
Extensive research has been devoted to preemptive scheduling. However, little attention has been paid to problems where a certain time penalty must be incurred if preemption is allowed. In this paper, we consider the single-machine scheduling problem of minimizing the total completion time subject to job release dates and preemption penalties, where each time a job is started, whether initially...
متن کاملA Multiprocessor System with Non-Preemptive Earliest-Deadline-First Scheduling Policy: A Performability Study
This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performability of a firm realtime system modeled by a multi-server queue. The service discipline in the queue is earliestdeadline- first (EDF), which is an optimal scheduling algorithm. Real-time jobs with exponentially distributed relative deadlines arrive according to a Poisson process. All jobs have deadlines until the end of s...
